An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial Can Give You the Complexion You've Always Dreamed Of

You can say goodbye to redness, dark spots, sun damage, blemishes, and more — gentle skin rejuvenation is just one medi-spa appointment away. The expert aestheticians at Skin Serenity Medispa will help you achieve the complexion of your dreams with an intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial.

What is a photofacial?

Photofacials use light to treat a variety of skin conditions, including discoloration and blemishes. Photofacial treatment is effective for these common conditions that fall under the broad categories of pigmentation and blemishes:

Intense pulses of light penetrate the deep layers of your skin to target problem areas at the root. Photofacials are safe for all skin types, though you may want to discuss outcomes with your aesthetician if you have a darker skin tone. Photofacials work best for people with light-to-medium skin tones.

You can receive photofacial treatments on your face, hands, neck, and chest.

How does an IPL facial work?

IPL photofacials use a handheld device that emits broad spectrum light (multiple wavelengths) through direct contact with the skin. The light acts on the deep layers of your skin, making it ideal for treating broken capillaries, sun damage, and other discolorations.

Light from the IPL photofacial soaks into hemoglobin (the protein in your red blood cells that carries oxygen) and melanin (pigmentation) in your skin to intentionally damage them.

The damaged melanin then breaks into small bits, and your skin absorbs it, decreasing the appearance of the pigmentation on your skin. The damaged hemoglobin in your blood stimulates blood flow, which helps your body absorb the melanin more easily.

This process also causes the tiny blood vessels beneath the outer layer of your skin to constrict, reducing the redness and age lines. Additionally, the light from an IPL photofacial stimulates the production of new collagen, which is essential for achieving a youthful tone and texture to your skin.

Each IPL photofacial treatment only takes about half an hour, but you may need a few follow-up treatments to achieve optimal results. You’ll start to see results in the weeks following your initial photofacial, with peak results appearing at six to 12 weeks post-treatment. During that time, you can come back for follow-up treatments.

Preparing for your IPL facial

You should be tan-free for your IPL photofacial — that includes tanning lotion, airbrush, and any other topical tanning methods. Artificial tans can prevent the IPL device from detecting the discoloration or blemishes you want to remove.

Before your photofacial, also make sure to notify your aesthetician of any medications you’re on, including antibiotics and any over-the-counter drugs. You will discuss medications and your health history during a pre-appointment consultation with an aesthetician at Skin Serenity.

Before the procedure begins, your aesthetician will give you protective eyewear and apply a cool gel to your treatment areas. The gel helps your aesthetician move the handpiece easily and cools your skin during treatment.

Depending on your unique skin tone, type, and conditions, your medical aesthetician customizes a photofacial treatment plan suited to your goals. Call Skin Serenity Medispa today at 978-226-3749 or schedule an appointment online to begin your journey to radiant skin.
